General Information

Food

  • You can check if a food is kosher at https://www.kosher.org.uk/

  • Sainsburys Garthdee has a (very) small amount of Kosher food in its World Food section.  Mark's Deli in Glasgow is the only kosher deli in Scotland (they can deliver to Aberdeen).

  • You can buy kosher food online from sites such as  https://www.sabeny.com/, .  If  you order from Sabeny, allow several days for delivery (do not rely on promises of next-day delievery)

  • There are no explicitly kosher restaurants in Aberdeen.  However there many excellent vegetarian restaurants, such as Foodstory

History of the Aberdeen Jewish Community

  • Aberdeen Hebrew Congregation was founded in 1893. It became the Aberdeen Synagogue and Jewish Community Centre in 2016 (Wikipedia entry)

  • The best history of the community is the chapter on Aberdeen in Nathan Abram's book Caledonian Jews.

Jewish Visitors to Aberdeen

  • Visitors are welcome at our events! Please email aberdeensynagogue@gmail.com if you wish to attend an event.  Note that we rarely get minyans outside of holidays and special events..

  • In some cases Jewish visitors can stay in a flat in our building.  Contact us for more information.

Religious

  • There is no rabbi at Aberdeen.  Sometimes rabbis visit us, but otherwise services are led by members of the community

  • There is no mikvah in Aberdeen.

  • We are very grateful to the Memorial Scrolls Trust for letting use of one of their Torah scrolls, MST 323 (originally from Bohemia and Moravia)

  • Shabbat candle-lighting times are available from Chabad and Hebcal
